Simone Walters moved to nipaluna (Hobart) in 2012 from Perth where they were Principal Contrabassoon with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra from 2009.
Sim is a regular member of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Van Diemen’s Band and appears regularly as a guest bassoonist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Classical and Romantic Orchestra. Sim’s freelance work includes engagements with all of Australia’s major Symphony Orchestras, Opera Australia, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Haydn Ensemble.
In 2015 Sim was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship for study of Baroque Bassoon Performance Practices which has taken their career in inspiring new directions. Sim’s passion for early music and the editing of unpublished manuscripts led to doctoral research at the University of Tasmania which was awarded in 2000.
Sim has presented at and participated in research conferences in L’viv (Ukraine), Oxford University and the University of Huddersfield (UK). In 2019 Sim completed a research residency at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz which enabled further exploration of the manuscript collections within their holdings, revealing new and promising pathways for future research.
