Presented by Ten Days on the Island and Van Diemen's Band

Heroines

Van Diemen's Band Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff has assembled an ensemble of artists from across the globe for Heroines, a cross-genre celebration of female composers from the Baroque and contemporary eras.

Works by little-known baroque composers including Barbara Strozzi, Francesca Caccini and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre are performed alongside new works by Australian composers Biddy Connor and Alice Chance, and Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdottír.

The VDB line-up includes London-based mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, renowned new/early music violin specialist Lizzy Welsh, and distinguished visiting French harpsichordist Aline Zylberajch. The inter-disciplinary project features a VDB commission from experimental film-maker Hanna Chetwin.

This extraordinary gathering of female artists from the past, present and future of music performance breaks new ground in Australia and exemplifies the Band’s innovative mindset within baroque music-making.

"Her tone was at once pure and thick with power; with expressive gestures flowing from her arms and face, she appeared to place herself entirely and unconditionally into the music."
— Stephanie Eslake, Lotte Betts-Dean at Dark Mofo Festival, Limelight Magazine
""...impressive control, an irrepressible sense of drama and extraordinary self-assurance...Betts-Dean manoeuvred unflustered between registers and vocal modes with an unbroken sense of line and an unmissable, urgent musicality""
— Flora Willson, The Guardian
