Presented by Van Diemen's Band

The Tuesday Lunchbox Concert Series returns to nipaluna/Hobart in August and September.

Curated by VDB’s artistic director, Julia Fredersdorff, our immensely popular lunchtime concert series returns to the Hobart Town Hall.

Escape the hustle and bustle and step into an oasis of calm listening to beautiful music in a casual and welcoming setting, with an eclectic program of music spanning a rich variety of genres and styles - all for the price of a sandwich!

Concert #1: Tuesday 22 August - LATITUDE 37

Lunchbox favourite Latitude 37 is back with a quirky and eccentric program of English tunes from 17th century courts and taverns.

Hailed by The Australian as “marvellously skilled and impeccably stylish … an Australian baroque group that can confidently mix it with the world’s best”, Latitude 37 features Julia Fredersdorff (violin), Laura Vaughan (viola da gamba) and Donald Nicolson (harpsichord).

Concert #2: Tuesday 29 August - GRYPHON BARYTON TRIO

Showcasing Australia's newly-arrived - and only - baryton, this superb program features chamber works by Joseph Haydn, performed with their intended instrumentation. The baryton is a rare and unusual instrument (like a viola da gamba with sympathetic strings) which caused a sensation in the 18th Century Esterházy court, only to disappear again 30 years later.

Laura Vaughan (baryton) joins Karina Schmitz (viola) and Martin Penicka (cello) for a Lunchbox full of invention and colour, with a veritable feast of low instruments creating unique and beautiful sonority.

Concert #3: Tuesday 5 September - VIRTUOSI TASMANIA

TSO’s principal oboist Shefali Pryor teams up with Jennifer Owen (violin), Douglas Coghill (viola) and Jonathan Békés (cello), to perform Mozart’s beautiful Oboe Quartet in F major and Benjamin Britten’s exquisite Phantasy Quartet, plus selections from Ernő Dohnányi’s lush Serenade for string trio.

Come hear their glorious music making, and stick around for a chat afterwards!

Concert #4: Tuesday 12 September - MEYERS & McNAMARA

You asked for it! Back by popular demand, Klezmer/Folk duo Meyers & McNamara (violin & piano accordion) are back for lunch! Be amongst the first to hear the brand new tunes they have recently recorded for their latest album. This Lunchbox comes with extra spice!

Concert #5 - Tuesday 19 September - JACQUELINE WARD & JANE EDWARDS: LEIDER AND LIGHT

After wowing audiences in pataway/Burnie earlier this year, Jacqueline Ward (soprano) and Jane Edwards (piano) take us back to the salons of the past with a beautiful program of gems from 19th Century songbooks, featuring Fanny Mendelssohn, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss and more.

"I can't believe I can fit a world-class experience like this into the middle of my day for $10. It's wild. A transporting, beautiful interlude which takes me out of the noise and into the music. Thank you."

"A great way to hear beautiful work (sometimes familiar, sometimes not) at a ridiculously good price"
