Presented by Van Diemen's Band
The Tuesday Lunchbox Concert Series returns to nipaluna/Hobart in August and September.
Curated by VDB’s artistic director, Julia Fredersdorff, our immensely popular lunchtime concert series returns to the Hobart Town Hall for the second of three series in 2024.
Escape the hustle and bustle and step into an oasis of calm listening to beautiful music in a casual and welcoming setting, with an eclectic program of music spanning a rich variety of genres and styles - all for the price of a sandwich!
Concert #1: Tuesday 20 August - SONG OF THE BIRDS *SOLD OUT*
This special concert presentation welcomes guests from nipaluna/Hobart's Japanese Sister City, Yaizu. Featuring performances from Yurikamome Children’s Choir and nipaluna/Hobart's Mount Carmel College Choir, this cross-cultural Lunchbox culminates in a performance of Song of the Birds with the divine sounds of VDB and massed children's choir.

Concert #2: Tuesday 27 August - GRYPHON BARYTON TRIO *SOLD OUT*
Australia's only baryton returns for its second-ever performance in lutruwita/Tasmania! This superb program features chamber works by Joseph Haydn, performed with their intended instrumentation. The baryton is a rare and unusual instrument (like a viola da gamba with sympathetic strings) which caused a sensation in the 18th Century Esterházy court, only to disappear again 30 years later.
Laura Vaughan (baryton) joins Katie Yap (viola) and Martin Penicka (cello) for a Lunchbox full of invention and colour, with a veritable feast of low instruments creating unique and beautiful sonority.

Concert #3: Tuesday 3 September - ALEXEY YEMTSOV *SOLD OUT*
A Lunchbox favourite, Ukraine-born lutruwita/Tasmanian-based pianist Alexey Yemtsov plays a program featuring Chopin's Fantasie in F minor Op.49 alongside works by Scriabin and Schubert.

Concert #4: Tuesday 10 September - LUKE PLUMB & KHALIDA DE RIDDER *SOLD OUT*
A meeting of musical minds - mandolin wizard Luke Plumb joins forces with classical/folk violinist Khalida de Ridder. Now back in Australia after years abroad playing with the cream of the international Celtic music scene, they bring their combined virtuosity to traditional melodies.

Concert #5: Tuesday 17 September - VAN DIEMEN'S VOICES *LIMITED TICKETS AVAILABLE*
Introducing .... Van Diemen's Voices! Directed by acclaimed lutruwitan/Tasmanian vocalist, composer and music director Quin Thomson, VDV explores the incredible array of music written for vocal ensemble.
This sublimely meditative performance celebrates reflective and transfixing works from the 12th-13th Centuries, including the mystic and visionary abbess, Hildegard of Bingen, alongside works by 21st century lutruwitan/Tasmanian composers Quin Thomson, Teri Young and Emily Sheppard.
Interspersed with instrumental interludes from Van Diemen's Fiddles, these entrancing vocal performances will bring the Spring Lunchbox Concert series to a captivating close.

"I can't believe I can fit a world-class experience like this into the middle of my day for $10. It's wild. A transporting, beautiful interlude which takes me out of the noise and into the music. Thank you."
"A great way to hear beautiful work (sometimes familiar, sometimes not) at a ridiculously good price."
